History
The town hasn’t always been called Chipley, but was named this after Florida state senator, William Dudley Chipley, in 1882. The community was originally named Orange, but renamed Chipley in honor of the senator and to recognize the completed railroad just beyond the town.
Chipley is located in Washington County, which is a dry county. Interestingly enough, though, the first business here was a wine shop. It didn’t last long, at least legally, however, because residents of the county voted it to be dry in 1899 and it has remained that way since.
The county seat was moved to where it is today after some confusion over the original location and the count seat being within the county. The confusion was cleared up and the town was moved. This moved prompted the name change to Chipley as well.
