Bonifay is located in Holmes County, Florida, and was named for a family with the same surname that lived in the area. Bonifay is the county seat of Holmes County. Currently, Bonifay is undergoing a growth spurt. There is a new hospital under construction as well as a new airport. The hospital will be built at State Road 79 and Interstate 10. There is even a theme park in the works to be built at the same intersection.

Choosing Bonifay, Florida, real estate over other properties in Florida just makes financial sense. The average home prices are lower, not to mention the average property taxes paid for property taxes in 2000 were $356 as opposed to $1,262 in the rest of Florida.

The nearest large city with a population more than 50,000 is 35.6 miles away and in Dothan, Alabama. Other close by cities include Caryville, Chipley, Vernon, Westville, Wausau, Esto, Marianna, and Black.

Activities

There are plenty of fun activities to be involved in for those with homes in Bonifay. There is the “Biggest All Night Gospel Sing in the World” that takes place every July and attracts thousands of people. Additionally, the “Northwest Florida Championship Rodeo” takes place in October and attracts cowboys from the United States and Canada. There are many categories like bull riding, bronco riding, roping, and the like.

Bonifay is not too far from Florida beaches, which makes it a great place to own residential homes because they are affordable yet still close to some of the state’s best attractions!

Demographics

There were 4,078 people in Bonifay according to the 2000 census in addition to 1,095 households and 669 families. Of the 1,097 households 27.5 percent of them had children under the age of 18. Married couples living together made up 40.5 percent and 16.5 percent were made up of women head of households. There were 36.4 percent that were non-families and 18.9 percent had someone over 65 living there. The average family size was 2.87 and the average household size was 2.21.

The city population had 16.4 percent who were 65 or older, 16.8 percent that were 45 to 64, 38.9 percent who were 25 to 44, 12.6 percent were 18 to 24, ad 15.3 percent were under age 18. The median age in the city was 35 years and there were 172.8 males for every 100 females. For every 100 males over age 18 there were 192 males.

The Bonifay median income for a household was $21,216 while a family’s median income was $33,077. Females had a median income of $18,529 while males made significantly more at a median of $26,250.

Famous Residents

Several famous individuals call Bonifay home. Raymon Hudson, a previous NFL football player, attended Holmes County High School in Bonifay. Chad Edelstein played football and baseball at Florida A&M University and was the first person from Holmes County to do so. James McFatter was an NCAA All-American for volleyball in the late 1950s.
