Meet Brenda Hatcher

As the real estate Broker/Owner of Coldwell Banker The Hatcher Agency, and having lived in the Northwest Panhandle of Florida my entire life, I have a wonderful opportunity to enjoy all the amazing natural resources this area has to offer. From the Alabama border on the North to the Georgia line on the East, and as far as I can drive in two hours West or South, I can see beautiful creeks, rivers, lakes, beaches, protected native forests, golf courses, caves, and museums. The nature reserves, fishing spots, managed hunting preserves, boating and water sports, gardens, zoos and numerous other activities are all within a short drive.

On any given weekend, I can begin my adventure by driving west of Malone, Florida on Hwy 2 to Cowart's Creek where the old Cypress tree "knees" remind me of regal, majestic Kings and Queens sitting on their thrones. From the bridge, I can watch turtles, deer, squirrels, egrets, herons, ospreys, and several varieties of songbirds.

Then I drive east to the Chattahoochee River which divides Florida from Georgia. Standing on the bank I watch the waters of that lazy river roll by me just as the Indians once did from their village at Neal's Landing. As a little girl, some of my fondest memories were of riding in my Papa's old Chevrolet down to the river so we could take a ferry ride over to the Georgia side and back. Lord, I looked forward to Sunday afternoons all week long just to have that adventure.

Every once in a while, I drive over to Sneads, Florida and visit the Three Rivers State Park for a picnic or travel a little further out on Hwy 90 east of Sneads to the West Bank Overlook bluff to see the Apalachicola River, Lake Seminole, and the Jim Woodruff Dam. Geese and ducks are always fishing for their lunch or sunning themselves after a swim. I love taking pictures of them in their natural habitat. The waterscape below the dam is usually dotted with fishermen in boats as they throw their fishing poles out and pull in large flathead catfish, striped bass, hybrid bass, and many other types of pan fish.

Some weekends, I like to wander on down past Altha, Blountstown, and Bristol Florida to the Apalachicola National Forest where I used to go and stay with friends at one of the many hunting camps in the area. My girlfriend and I weren't there to hunt, only to read and relax. However, that all changed the morning we awoke to 15 degree temperature (not typical temperature for this area) and no heat in the cabin. The husbands were forced to forsake deer hunting in our quest for a warmer climate in the cab of the pick-up trucks headed home. Needless to say, we were never invited to accompany them again on a hunting trip.

Almost any day, at lunch, I can visit the many landings located near Marianna on the Chipola River. Several of these are Yancey's Landing, Magnolia Landing, and Peacock's Landing. Standing on the landing, the water always looks as if it is in such a hurry as it passes me by, rushing toward its next destination and ultimately into the Gulf of Mexico. If I don't have a lot of time, I can always feast on a delicious sub sandwich at the Old Ice House Restaurant (locally known as Bull's University of Florida Gator Den) while overlooking Merritt's Mill Pond. The view from the restaurant overlooking this spring fed lake is absolutely gorgeous. Those are the days when I wish I did not have to go back to work and could continue to sit until the sun goes down, but for now, it's back to work.

As I travel the highways and byways of my Northwest Florida Panhandle, I will continue to describe for you, in words and photos, the beauty and attractions we are so lucky to have so that you will come to understand why I love this area so much. Who knows, maybe you will fall in love with it also.
